There is the possibility of severe weather on Sunday for West and Central Alabama with the main threats of damaging winds up to 60 mph and quarter size hail.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, “conditions are expected to become more supportive for severe storms by the time a second round of rain and storms develops along a cold front, affecting the area afternoon to early evening.”

Risk Levels

Storm Prediction Center has the risk levels for severe thunderstorms for areas south of I-20 under a “slight risk” which is a level 2 out 5 of There is also a “marginal risk” which is a level 1 out 5 over the northern third of the state.

James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist “rain and a few storms are likely during the morning hours, but the severe weather threat will come later in the day, during the afternoon and evening hours.”

The overall timeframe is from Noon until 8 p.m. However, our coverage area is from Noon until 2 p.m. and then another portion of the coverage area is from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.

Threat Levels

"The main threat with stronger storms will come from strong winds and hail, but a few isolated tornadoes are possible, mainly across South Alabama tomorrow evening," said Spann.

Rain Amounts

Rain amounts of around one inch are likely tonight and tomorrow, with isolated amounts of two inches.
