The National Weather Service in Birmingham said that the “southern/southeastern corridor of Central Alabama stands the most risk, at this time, to see two rounds of severe storms.”

Risk Levels

The Storm Prediction Center has issued for the majority of Central and South Alabama an "enhanced risk" which is a level 3 out of 5 for severe thunderstorms. The areas north of I-20 are under a "slight risk" which is a level 2 out of 5.

Possible Threats

Tornadoes

Damaging winds up to 60 mph

Quarter size hail

Localized flooding

James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist said that “the highest tornado threat is in the enhanced risk over the southern 2/3 of the state, and one or two strong tornadoes (EF-2 or higher) are possible there.”

Timing

Spann said that “we have the potential for two rounds of severe storms. One this afternoon and this evening, and another one after midnight. That is why you see the large windows on our timing graphic, lasting around 15 hours. Severe storms could develop over far West Alabama as early as 11 am, and could linger across Southeast Alabama as early as 8 am tomorrow.”
