The Hunter Whitley Butterfly Initiative, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was established to offer accessible resources, support, and education and raise awareness about the mental health challenges faced by veterans, the veteran suicide crisis, and the stigma associated with mental health issues.

Whitley, a Marine Corps Infantryman who participated in the Kabul Evacuation of August 2021, began pursuing Computer Science at The University of Alabama after his service. He tragically took his life in 2022. According to the press release, “Despite appearing happy to be back in his hometown, Hunter struggled deeply with his mental health, a struggle unknown to his family and friends.”

"The rising veteran mental health crisis in America is a pressing issue."

The initiative is committed to preserving Hunter's legacy through advocacy and support. Its particular focus is on addressing the escalating veteran mental health crisis, a cause that was deeply important to Whitley.
