The National Weather Service in Birmingham said, “An outbreak of severe storms is expected this afternoon into early Sunday morning. Risks include strong, potentially long-track tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds.”

Risk Areas for West Alabama

The part that is concerning is that West Alabama has been included in a RARE “High Risk” level, which is 5 out of 5. Outside of those portions under that rare risk level, the rest of the Yellowhammer State is under a 4 out of 5 risk level.

The last high risk issued for a part of Alabama was on March 25, 2021.

Concerning Threats

Strong tornadoes, potentially long-tracked

2" diameter hail

Damaging winds up to 70 mph

James Spann, ABC 33/40 and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist, said, “The greatest concern is round two, which comes from roughly 11:00 a.m. until a little after midnight. During this time, a few violent, long-track tornadoes will be possible anywhere in Alabama.”

How to Prepare

I strongly encourage each Alabamian to know what county and section of the county they live in. Also, know the surrounding counties to understand what could be headed your way.

Make sure you’re ready to move to your safe place. Talk with family, friends, and coworkers to identify the best spot. While tornado warnings have become more precise, planning can save precious seconds when it matters most.
