It already feels like summer across Alabama, but it officially starts this Friday, June 20. What does this mean for the future of summer heat and rainfall for our area?

Our summer outlook spans the months of mid-June, July, August, and September. While Memorial Day signals the unofficial start to summer, Labor Day serves as the unofficial end to summer.

When Does the Fall Season Start?

It depends on who you ask. The meteorological start to Fall is September 1, while Autumn Equinox, September 22, marks the beginning of the fall season or pumpkin spice season for some.

Overall Summer Temperature Forecast

Looking back to the spring months, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information, “It was the second-warmest spring in the 131-year record.”

For Alabama, the March through May temperature ranks above the average seasonal temperatures.

Now, this might be a shocker: Todd Crawford, Vice President of Meteorology at Atmospheric G2, told The Weather Channel that our area could expect a “relatively cool summer across the Southeast.”

However, let me remind you that our favorite word in the southern region is humidity. (It’s not our favorite)

The Farmer’s Almanac highlights that Alabama and other southern states should expect “brutally humid and wet conditions.”

Overall Summer Rainfall Predictions

“Multiple severe weather events brought heavy rainfall across the South, making it the wettest May on record for Alabama,” said the National Centers for Environmental Information.

For the summer months, trends are showing that Alabama will be under a near or slightly above average rainfall forecast. This also includes the “Gulf Coast northward into the mid-Atlantic and southern New England from July through September,” said The Weather Channel.

The Townsquare Media Weather Center will continue to track summer conditions and keep informed.
