Tide QB Named to Another Prestigious Preseason Watch List
Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe was added to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Watch List on Wednesday, August 21st. Having already been on the watch lists for Davey O'Brien, Manning, and Unitas Golden Arm, Milroe—a former season finalist for the award—is now on the preseason watch list for the award.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Roose Award is given each year at the end of the season to the Division I offensive player who embodies the characteristics of Texas Longhorns great Earl Campbell. Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon Jr won the prestigious award last season. According to Matt Melton's Yahoo Sports article, no Alabama player has ever won this award.
Jalen Milroe is entering his second season as the Tide's starting quarterback after an impressive debut season last year, leading the Tide to a Conference Championship and an appearance in the College Football Playoffs, where Milroe and the Tide were eliminated in the semi-final game by the Michigan Wolverines in heartbreaking fashion. Michigan went on to win the 2023-2024 College Football Playoffs National Championship against Milroe's new head coach's former team.
The 6'2" and 225-pound quarterback, who is one of the key players to watch for the Heisman Trophy race this year, will be looking for redemption and a chance to show any remaining doubters that Alabama is not going away and that he is more than capable of leading the Crimson Tide to a National Championship while proving that he is the best player in college football.
Milroe hopes to build on his experience from last season and prosper under the new offensive scheme of Alabama's new head coach, Kalen DeBoer. Last season, the redshirt junior passed for 2,834 yards and 23 touchdowns while completing 65.8 percent of his passes. Milroe, like Earl Campbell, is dangerous with his feet, resulting in 12 rushing scores and more than 531 yards on the ground, according to Milroe's profile on Alabama's Football Website.
The Katy, Texas native enters the 2024-2025 football season as one of the top college football players in the country. Milroe and the Crimson Tide will open their season next Saturday, August 31st, at Bryant Denny Stadium against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.
