The city of Birmingham has slowly been re-imagining itself and transforming into a destination for travelers visiting the South. Thanks to a commitment by the people that work and live in central Alabama, the nation has taken more notice to the changes happening right here at home.

Zagat, which has been a go-to source for tourists for 30+ years, recently named Birmingham the top up-and-coming city in the country. With a top 10 list that included five Southeastern cities, the Magic City outranked them all.

This is how Zagat explained the result:

Birmingham? Yes, Birmingham. The breakout market from our survey ranked as the most-improved dining scene in the country over the past five years, hit high marks for a talented roster of chefs and is one that is expected to continue its stellar upward trajectory. It’s safe to say that its dining and drinking culture has never been more exciting.

You can read everything the website said about Birmingham here, but anyone that has spent some time in the downtown area over the past five years has seen the improvements first-hand. The city continues to expand its cultural, dining and nightlife options, and it's great to see the area gaining some recognition on a national level.
