Seven former Alabama players were cut from NFL rosters Saturday to meet the 53-man roster deadline ahead of the start of the regular season this weekend.

Linebacker Nico Johnson (Kansas City Chiefs), safety Robert Lester (Carolina Panthers), tight end Brad Smelley (St. Louis Rams), offensive tackle Michael Williams (Detroit Lions), outside linebacker Adrian Hubbard (Green Bay Packers), guard Anthony Steen (Arizona Cardinals) and defensive end Damion Square (Philadelphia Eagles) were all released Saturday.

Square was claimed off waivers by the Chiefs on Sunday, while Johnson, Lester, Williams, Hubbard and Steen were signed to the practice squads of the team that cut them.

Practice squads will now be made up of 10 players per team, following the NFL's decision to expand from eight players this offseason. Players chosen for the practice squad should all be announced Sunday.
