Changes to the College Football Playoff schedule are coming, but it's likely not what you hoped for.

Beginning this year, the semifinal games will continue to be played on New Year's Eve but the kickoff times will move up one hour. The games on December 31 will start at 2 PM/CT and 6 PM/CT.

“As we committed earlier this year, we have looked at the landscape for the upcoming season and are confident that this change will make it easier for more fans to watch the games on television and also will benefit fans who will attend the games in person,” Executive Director Bill Hancock said.  “The semifinals will be played on Saturday for the first time.   The Capital One Orange Bowl will be in an evening time slot, which is its tradition.”

Ratings dropped significantly for the College Football Playoff semifinals three months ago and this move hopes to improve viewership.

Hancock remains committed to the New Year's Eve timeslot and believes it strikes a good balance for college football fans.

“The first two years have shown us that the playoff is extremely popular with fans and that we successfully struck an appropriate balance creating a new event while maintaining the great traditions that have enabled college football to hold such an important place in the country’s culture,” Hancock said.

This year's semifinal games will be played at the Fiesta Bowl and the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
