Coca-Cola Releases Civil Rights Commemorative Bottle in Birmingham

The City of Birmingham is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement, and Coca-Cola has released a limited-edition commemorative glass bottle in honor of this milestone in American History. Southern Living writes the following:

"In 1963, The Magic City was the nerve center of the country’s battle for racial equality. From Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” that first galvanized the fight for Civil Rights, to the 16th Street Baptist Church bombings, to protests at Kelly Ingram Park, the city’s storied streets and buildings are rife with memories from this tumultuous era. In recognition of its pivotal role in the movement, Birmingham was selected as the first of seven historically significant cities in which the bottle will be sold. Other participating cities include: Selma and Montgomery, AL; Columbia, SC; Jackson, MS and Washington D.C., while a few additional cities have yet to be announced.

Each eight-ounce bottle bears a “50 Years Forward” logo—a commemorative campaign for the Civil Rights Movement designed by Big Communications, a Birmingham-based PR company.

Over the course of the year, Coca-Cola will also be sponsoring events, service projects, and educational activities within Birmingham. The company will also demonstrate their recognition of the Civil Rights Movement by awarding grants to Historically Black Colleges and Universities for first generation scholarships."
