One of the best basketball prospects in state history got a recruiting pitch from the governor less than a decade after George Wallace's stand in the school house door at the University of Alabama.

Leon  Douglas himself did stay in his home state to play college basketball at Alabama, and he made history of his own. He was part of the 1973--74 Alabama team that  became the first in the SEC to start five black players and win the SEC championship in the process.

In 1963, black students were unwelcome, but today Alabama is a champion with  togetherness black and white.
