Columnist Charley Thornton interviewed former University Of Alabama Presdient  Frank Rose about his hiring of Bryant away from the Aggies in 1958. Rose said Bryant ask what the job paid? Rose told him $25,000.

Bryant asked, what do deans earn? When he was told they earned $18,000, he said he would work for that, as well, because if he was paid more, they would flunk his boys out. Bryant worked for $18,000 the entire 12 years that Rose was President.
